Kevin Purcell reviews and comments

Kevin Purcell has sought the cultural and musicological tradition in the art and practice of conducting. He deems himself fortunate to have learned from some of the finest teachers around the world, each noted for his interpretation of particular composers. Kevin has always felt such apprenticeship to be of paramount importance in the development of a young conductor.
Who better to study under than

  • Georg Tintner, the student of Felix Weingartner, for the BEETHOVEN symphonies.
  • Myer Fredman, of Glyndebourne and the Australian Opera, for the opera repertoire of MOZART, PUCCINI and RICHARD STRAUSS.
  • Gerald Gentry, BBC Staff Conductor for over 20 years, for the English music repertoire.
  • Dr. Otakar Trhlík, Professor of Conducting at the Janáckova Akademie Múzickych v Umeni in Brno, for the Czech repertoire.
In 1991 Kevin was awarded an international scholarship to study Russian music, especially the complete symphonies of TCHAIKOVSKY and SHOSTAKOVICH, with Leonid Nikolaev, Professor of Conducting at the Moscow Conservatoire.
Formal studies in composition and pianoforte were undertaken in Australia with such noted teachers as Brenton Broadstock, Barry Conyngham and Patricia Leslie. Most of Kevin's symphonic works have been recorded and broadcast for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
"The whole concert had a wonderful energy about it, which came from Music Director Kevin Purcell's dynamic leadership, and his obvious rapport with the musicians."
